KAPATIRAN

KAPWA TAO

Filipino Martial Arts is a fighting art that was handed to us by our great ancestors who developed their skills in the use of swords, knives, sticks, and various weapons for the purpose of defending others and for protecting ones self. The term "KAPWA TAO" in Filipino is the notion of a "Shared Self" which is extending ones self to include others as well. This is the core of Filipino personhood. The learning of a fighting art always has to do with self protection that naturally includes others be it his or her own family, friends and their families and even strangers who are in need of it as well. This also means giving ones self in service to his/her Motherland. The values underneath "KAPWA TAO" or shared self are the words "BAHALA NA" (determination), PAKIKIBAKA (resistance), and "LAKAS NG LOOB" (guts). It also extends to societal values such as "KARANGALAN" (dignity), "KATARUNGAN" (justice) and "KALAYAAN" (freedom)These values are inculcated in the minds, hearts and souls of every arnisador. Therefore a true bastonero, kalista, eskrimador or arnisador  is not just a fighter. These values aside from the physical training should lead to the development of a Kalista's totality as a "Mandirigma", "BAGANI" or a Noble warrior.

May pabagsak. Merong pahiga, pataas, pabundol, pakaskas, pwedeng pasibat, dik-dik, ipit at sikwat.

Sa pagdepensa naman ay merong bangga, may umaayon sa pwersa, may pinapaawas, pasampal at merong simpleng ilag o lampas.

Ang distansya ay dalawa lamang. Distansyang hampasan at distansiyang  punyuan.

Gamitin sa wasto at ipasa ang kaalaman sa karapatdapat lamang.

SEDA VERTIS NORTH KNIFE DEFENSE SEMINAR FOR SECURITY PERSONNEL

Protection within and without.
Security is a basic reality ever since the time of the first man. To survive he had to secure the resources he gathered and protect them from any threat. From a constant threat seen and unseen, self defense becomes vital for security to be effective. Being able to defend yourself and others makes a big difference for a successful security. The Introductory self defense training and orientation by Abenir Kalis led by Maestro Bong Abenir and the able security leadership of Yvan A. Pagulayan is an initiative to provide a means to prepare the security personnel of Seda Vertis for inevitable threats. Its a step towards protection from within - when minor violence erupts - and protection from without- thinking ahead before untoward incidents even happen. Success favors the prepared.

By Chris Dalida

AKS would like to thank sir Yvan for giving us this wonderful opportunity to share our skills and knowledge to the security personnel of Seda Vertis. Indeed this is a beautiful start of forging good friendly relations and for better things to come Mabuhay po sa inyong lahat! - bong abenir

"The empty hand fighting system could be practiced anytime at any stage or level of the practitioner"

The weapons progression is used in conjunction with the empty hand training progression of the system in order for the practitioner to get a "complete education" in the variables possible with the major techniques and tactics employed in Filipino Warrior Arts.

The major characteristics of the Abenir Kalis is efficiency. It is a very pragmatic and practical system which applies the laws of physics and psychology. It does not waste time with unnecessary movements but instead goes right through the heart of the problem when dealing with an adversary. We make sure that the practitioner is able to fight or defend himself in just a few sessions of training withing the system. Although it does not mean achieving mastery of the skills and techniques within the system in such a short period of time but rather the know how and confidence during a street encounter is what we are after (learn to fight first, then work on the finer points of the art later). That is why we do away with a lot of rote drills  (we focus only on a few drills and spend more time on free form and coaching when applying the skills learned for sparring and for street fighting) during the first sessions but instead we help the student analyze the different strategies and tactics that could be employed during a street fight. It does not matter much how well you execute the techniques during a fight as long as it scores or hits the target. People are not concerned on how beautiful or skillful you employ your techniques but whether who is left standing during the encounter. After learning these things, only then comes the formal training for the purpose of mastery and teaching of the system.

EVERYTHING IS SITUATIONAL

EVERTYHING IS SITUATIONAL

Techniques may or may not work. Everything is situational. There are certain conditions wherein a technique would work perfectly at a given situation while certain conditions using the same techniques could also fail miserably. Some executions are done cleanly and yet somehow comes out ineffective while some executions are done poorly yet to our surprise comes out effectively. So again everything is situational which means that it is highly dependent on circumstances that arise during the exchange of attacks and counterattacks, quickness on reactions to openings and reading the opponent’s intent and other factors concerning an individual's attributes. During demos in some of our videos, we deliberately intend to show how certain techniques work and executed during practice especially on the beginning stages of a beginner's progression. Naturally as things are done in a slow manner it is easy to perform cleanly and inject as many attacks one could deliver. And so it seems to be executed so smoothly basing the movements on this level. But these perceptions quickly changes once it is done in full combat speed and even moreso once full sparring becomes the nature of the game. Then we start to realize that indeed every skill, techniques thus require certain circumstances or even those coming out of a fluke for it to work. I maintain that some techniques are inserts and others are primary and there are no such thing as superior arts over the other but only superior on a certain situation.  Which is often, until now very much misunderstood.

INSTINCTIVE KNIFE DEFENSE SEMNAR

LET NATURE TAKE ITS COURSE
I was told by one of my teacher that It's not about getting away clean or unscathed or even victorious in a knife fight or knife defense situation. Although these are indeed desirable. But the true priority is to be able to survive that hellish situation one might find him or herself into. He retells to me his violent past experiences and stressed his point into my mind that a blade encounter is something that a person with a sound mind should really not aspire to get into. But he quickly stressed equally that if forced to act due to an attack, then one has to do everything in order to protect and preserve one's life. And in truth, as much as one wishes to control the outcome, the result would always be different for everybody. Either one of them ends up getting badly hurt, or both of them comes out with an equal predicament or that one of them ends up six feet below the ground or could be that both end up dead. One could never determine these results until its over. So there's nothing really to fantasize about it. Because It's just plain ugly. So we can only train ourselves as much as we can in order to prepare ourselves for any such unfortunate event. And if it comes, (let's hope not) all we can do is to give our very best to come out of it alive and survive the trauma that comes with it right after through the help of our acquired skills and along with the deeper training that one gets out of it which strengthens our mental faculties. With all these said,
Let nature takes it course.

ABENIR KALIS IS ALWAYS EVOLVING

IF YOU'RE NOT TRAINING TO ADAPT  - YOU WON'T SURVIVE THE STREETS

First of all, there's really nothing wrong with training with antiquated stuff most especially if one is really drawn to these type of things and enjoying much of the skill and history behind  it. And it's not entirely useless either. But some do go way overboard and think that these are highly practical arts for the streets and convinces others as well. Until someone asks: Now we're on the streets, so what do you do when someone attacks you without your sword or stick? Some may quickly argue that the weapons are just mere extensions of the hand. Could be true, but how much is your empty hand translation actually practical for defense? or how much time did you train in it? let alone pressure test it. One should distinguish between those that areTHEATRICAL, HISTORICAL, a mere SPECTACLE for movies and to what is PRACTICAL for the streets. Let us ask ourselves the probable outcome from this hypothetical question: Who would likely survive on a real rough and tumble situation on the streets between a group of men or women who goes in and out of prison for either stabbing, mugging, abducting or shooting someone and has committed their lives into doing notorious and horrendous crimes against a group of skilled martial artists who have trained hard and entered competitions or even perhaps even engaged in challenge matches just to prove who's better than the other.
So just my two cents regarding this. It's probably safe to say that 8 out of 10 times those group of men who went in and out of prison would surely have a better chance in surviving the rough and tumble on the streets or who are  more unlikely to fall into a street attack set-up.   Why? because they have experienced how to run around their lives in it.  They do most of the walk, run, jump, roll, slide, sleep, hustle and practically lived on it. These are the type of people who could go around and would politely ask someone to light up their cigarette and then out of nowhere stabs the person with a knife or shoots them with a gun even while inside their jackets then simply walks away. We see that these guys may not have what a skilled martial artist may have. They might not even posses the good physical fitness or conditioning that martial artists do have. They may not be familiar about the techniques, drills, and what have you. But what separates them on top when it comes to the real deal is their minds (a thug's/criminal's mind) and their way of doing things (a thug's/criminal ‘s strategy).  You see, they do have their own ways of training too. Just ask those boys (if you happen to catch one) who does pickpockets out in the open without being detected. They're like magicians when it comes to the art of pick pocketing. They have adopted training methods and drilled all types of scenarios to perfect this particular skill. So when they actually do it they know every in and out of it. And if they get caught-they are willing to pull a knife and stab a person with it. Ok back to a more professional type of hard core thugs. Remember that these are the guys that are likely to shake your hand after they lost a fist fight then later goes back to your house at night with his friends and destroys everyone else's life including yours. These guys don't have a notion of getting fair with no one. And they are willing to take someone else's life to do the job done. It's their strategies and their mind-set and experiences that literally gives them that edge.
So am I suggesting to adopt the same strategies and mindsets? No, of course not. But we can always learn from them and study ways to guard ourselves against them. That's why I value the wisdom of my very first teacher who was actually living and dealing with such men at the time I met him. He left me one advise that I will never forget. Kapag kailangan lumaban - GAWING MADALIAN at MABILISAN. Kapag bumulagata - TAKBUHAN NA!
Eng. trans. - "Upon entering an unfamiliar place (most especially) - BE MINDFUL OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS. When a stranger approaches you, be it a man or a woman - BE ALERT. When you start to feel something's not right- GET OUT or BE GONE ALREADY! But if you have to fight - MAKE IT FAST AND BE QUICK ABOUT IT. If you drop the assailant - RUN! That is strategy! And there are many more regarding tactics or strategies that any martial artists should acquire and begin to practice. This is why we at AKS started training more with weapons that are more relevant  on the streets instead of focusing on what we usually did before such as sword to sword or stick to stick fights which in reality is very unlikely to happen.  We are more focusing now on defending against knives, ice picks, lead pipes, baseball bats, firearms while at the same time learning how to use them in order to understand the mechanics on how it could be used against us or in case if we must use them also to defend our lives and others if we have to.  We engage more on drills that involves good tactical response which balances offense and defense. Then we train to adopt a SURVIVAL MENTALITY with the help of our brothers that have related background and actual experiences which they share and that we could learn from and vise-versa. That's why we stick together and therefore rely on each another and find no need to outshine one another.

Note: Yes we still do practice with swords, sticks and other things we have but it is no longer our primary focused. What may be true for us yesterday may not be necessarily be true today and certainly could be different tomorrow.  AKS continues to evolve.

A caveat:
Beware of people claiming to know our system. Some of which may have learned a few things from us but haven't got a clue of what AKS isall about. The only reliable sources are instructors currently on our official list.

IN THE LIFE OF SERVICE

By Christopher Dalid, AKS

Most would define service as working or doing help for someone. Our men in uniform brings greater honor to the term by practicing it as a life of sacrifice for the greater good. From training under the heat of the sun, surviving under extreme weather conditions, finding comfort in meager habitations, being always in constant pressure, being paid modest salaries and compensations, and having lives in danger 24x7, these men epitomize true sacrifice. Laying their life and their family's in the service of country. In our little way, Abenir Kalis System can only give back to their sacrifices by laying fundamentals of practical self defense that may help in keeping their lives for the people they serve. Long live our servicemen!

AKS Seminar at Bicutan PNP-SAF Headquarters

AKS seminar at Bayleaf Hotel, Intramuros

Service where it matters.
By Christopher Dalida, AKS

The Bayleaf Hotel rest in the historical ruins of Intramuros in Manila. The service it provides translate to the hospitality of the Filipino as a people and the security it shows will speak to foreigners and visitors how we keep our places safe. It is paramount thus that its security personnel is able to keep up with the demands and risk involved in their work. Teaching self defense and providing a mindset as to when and where it matters. This is service to our countrymen and a start to a journey towards making people aware that we have our own self defense system that addresses or seek to address the current needs of Filipinos in protecting themselves and their love ones using their present status or situation in life. To make self protection relevant by using a self defense system based on our cultural heritage and awareness of current situation in a local setting. Being in the now and being in a Filipino mindset of today. Thanks also to our AKS brothers from the Philippine Coast Guard Anti-Terrorist Unit who serve with humility and sincerity.
